Jo - Sales Consultant
I'm Jo, I'm a Sales Consultant in Direct Sales, the Call Centre for nationwide. I've worked for nationwide for five years, I've been in direct sales for the last 18 months. The best thing has got to be the bonus structure, fantastic rewards if you do well. If you're a top performer then you can earn quite a lot of money in the sales department. In the past six months I've earned £4000 in bonuses so yeah, its quite good. Being in a sales role there's obviously targets. In this current market, with selling mortgages it's been quite tough so I've had to work really hard to achieve target. The training in direct is really structured. You'll do a week training and then you'll go into the office with work support and you'll actually put what you've learnt into practice. and then you'll go back into the classroom environment and learn your next skills before going back into the office and putting them into practice. Its certainly a very friendly environment to work in. there's people from different backgrounds, people from all different cultures, so there's a good mix of people definitely.
Chris - Senior Customer Consultant
My name's Chris and I'm one of the Senior Customer Consultants in Direct Service. The 9 to 5 role is taking calls from customers calling with queries about their mortgages, insurance, bank accounts, savings accounts. The senior part of it is I will take on the complaint calls if we've made a mistake or there is a problem with a customer, that's when I'll become involved and we'll try and resolve a customer's complaint as quickly and efficiently as possible. The team atmosphere we've got in the call centre is brilliant. Everything changes every day, but the way it's managed on the call centre is really good, it's fast paced, but its so relaxed, we get on as a team.
Prove your ability and there’s the potential to move up in the company and enjoy the chance of earning an uncapped monthly bonus.
People in our Northampton Contact Centre talk to our customers over the phone. Their job is to build rapport, capitalise on their eye (and ear) for detail and make sure customers get the most from Nationwide. They might be selling new products, delivering an efficient, informed service or advising customers who’ve found themselves in debt on repayment options. If you’re keen to progress, there’s plenty of scope to develop your career in other areas of the business as well.
These are the main types of role:
Customer Sales Consultant
There are many things that make life as a Customer Sales Consultant in our Northampton contact centre especially rewarding. You’ll be promoting competitive, award-winning products ranging from insurance to mortgages. All calls are inbound and there’s absolutely no cold calling.
Prove your ability and there's the potential to move up in the company and enjoy the chance of earning a quarterly bonus. While there is pressure to hit targets, we also focus on building relationships with our customers. By working out which of our products best meet their needs and helping them get the most from their relationship with Nationwide.
But answering call after call from people interested in our products all day long can be tough (and making sure they get exactly the right product for them, doubly so). However, we set challenging, but achievable sales targets, and give bonuses for meeting them.
Financial services experience isn’t essential as long as you're confident, determined, a great communicator and, above all, able to build rapport with customers. Bring us qualities like these and we’ll give you all the training and support you need to do a great job.

Customer Service Consultant
Customer Service Consultants do everything possible to help customers manage their finances better. That can mean taking care of anything from an address change or opening an account to handling an overdraft request. You’ll also generate new leads for our Customer Sales Consultants by identifying whether customers would benefit from any other products. There are targets, but they’re in place to motivate you.
It’s a role where personality makes all the difference. Each customer is an individual with their own specific needs and the way you communicate with them directly affects how they think and feel about us. So, rather than financial services experience, you’ll need the ability to listen, empathise and inspire confidence. If you also have loads of initiative and essential PC skills plus the determination to deliver a great service, our training will teach you the rest.
There are also other roles, such as team managers and trainers, which call for specific experience.
Each role calls for different skills, but enthusiasm, helpfulness and teamwork are important across the board.
