Commercial

Commercial plays a vital role in the overall success of Nationwide Group. They have a loan portfolio of over £20bn, making them one of the UK’s top lenders in the commercial property market. They’re also a leading provider of finance to both the Project Finance and the Social and Affordable Housing sectors, and boast a fast-growing deposit raising business.

Commercial comprises several specialised business areas, including Business Development, Deposits, Housing Finance and Customer Management. The Business Development team provides the finance for new schools, hospitals and fire stations, while the Housing Finance team helps housing associations acquire, develop and improve their housing stock. In Customer Management they provide relationship management services for our property investor borrowers, in the Specialised Support and Recoveries team they support underperforming loans and in the Service and Support team they provide critical loan administration, banking and security management services across all business areas.

Graduates

As part of the Commercial graduate programme, you’ll acquire detailed knowledge of credit and financial analysis. You’ll then apply this knowledge in at least one of the three core market sectors to assess the performance of existing borrowers and the risks of new business proposals. This will mean getting involved in everything from cash flow and risk modelling to minimising losses on defaulting loans. You’ll also be expected to draft comprehensive credit reports and analyse and understand complex legal documentation.

Although the work you do will depend on the area in which you are based, graduates typically report to a lending or senior lending manager who either manages a portfolio of customer relationships or develops new business with new and existing clients. If a customer’s loans were to require restructuring, for instance, you would join the negotiations to safeguard Nationwide’s position, while providing support to our clients.

Whatever the specific nature of your role, you’ll enjoy wide-ranging experiences and be given hands-on responsibilities. If during your time with us you demonstrate strong leadership potential, you could easily take on a more senior leadership role – overseeing a significant section of a business area – within 3-5 years.

Requirements

To join, you’ll need a 2:1 degree in any discipline and 260 UCAS points (excluding general studies) or the equivalent.

A natural leader with excellent numerical skills, you’ll be the type of person who views every issue objectively and never rushes to a decision.
