Human Resources
“I can see my career progressing upwards from here. I see myself developing every day, and there are opportunities every day. I’m still recognised as a member of the scheme although I came off it a year ago and people are really willing to put the time and effort into you and into your development.”
Rachael – HR Business Advisor. Graduate Programme 2008 – 2010Nothing is more important to an organisation than its people. By developing their talents and including them in the wider aims of the business, our award-winning HR team strives to make each individual’s experience as fulfilling as it is productive. This involves everything from attracting the right people in the first place and boosting individual performance, to creating an agile workforce that can adapt to changing needs.
This division comprises many areas: HR Business Partnering, Employee Relations, Reward & Recognition, Resourcing, Leadership & Performance Management, HR Change and HR Services. The Employee Relations team develops industry-leading people policies on issues such as diversity and health & safety, while the HR Change team coordinates the people elements of large-scale corporate change programmes, including mergers and acquisitions. Whatever the team though, our HR division works collectively to build organisational capability, recruit the right people, develop talent, recognise achievement and provide guidance to our staff on everyday matters and issues of a more serious nature.
Graduates
As part of the HR graduate programme, you’ll spend 18 months working on a variety of projects across the team’s different areas. One day you could find yourself creating an Investor in People initiative, the next you could be proposing ideas to improve our recruitment process. All along the way we’ll aim to help you gain your CIPD qualification through financial sponsorship and study leave, and set you up for an important future role within the business. In five years’ time you could become anything from a Leadership and Development Manager, overseeing the education sponsorship programme and senior executive development, to a HR Business Partner, looking after the HR People Strategy for a quarter of Nationwide’s employees.
Business needs evolve every day. So while we can’t tell you the projects you’ll be working on in the future, we can give you a good idea of them by mentioning ones HR graduates have worked on in the past. One graduate, for instance, worked on the biggest change programme in our history, mapping over 2,000 people into new roles and saving over £26m in the process. They also managed over 400 disciplinary, competency, grievance and probation cases, led graduate assessment centres and helped re-launch the Nationwide mentoring scheme.
Requirements
To join, you’ll need a 2:1 degree in any discipline and 260 UCAS points (excluding general studies) or the equivalent.
Curious and objective, you’ll be the type of person who likes to share ideas and listen to both sides of every story. You’ll also have excellent communication and influencing skills.
