IT and Change Management

"In my first placement I was an operations manager for IT development.. In my second placement I was in Enterprise Architecture where I was responsible for writing the strategy for Human Resources systems.. My third placement was one of the biggest challenges, I was a team manager in Customer Operations…. My fourth placement was as Executive Assistant to the Leadership Team, I was working directly with the Executive Director and his direct reports."

Nitish – Transformation Projects – Reporting & Control Manager. Graduate Programme 2009 – 2011

Right now Nationwide is going through a phenomenal £1bn transformation programme to update our core banking platform, revitalise our internet bank and build our mobile banking proposition. It’s a massive undertaking involving over 100 programmes and projects, all of which need to be delivered with pace, efficiency and quality. And all of which are designed to improve member services and create an even better customer experience.

Our success in doing this will be largely down to the five functions who make up our IT & Change Management division. The first team, Operational Strategy and Architecture, is responsible for creating our future strategy and business architecture. Working with top managers across the business – as well as with key partners such as IBM – they ensure we are up-to-date with the latest IT developments and competitor activities.

The second and third teams, Business Transformation and Enterprise Development, are responsible for planning change, project management, project delivery and project release – and enables us to transform the way we work to fit our customers’ needs. Some of the multi-million pound investment programmes they’re currently working on include testing a new internet bank, launching a new credit card range and looking at how we can take advantage of smart phone technology to improve our mobile banking proposition. They’re also about to launch a core banking platform using SAP technology, something no one in the industry has done before.

The fourth team, Group Services, oversees the development of all the technology we use, from the PCs on our desks to the ATMs in our branches. Working closely with strategic partners including BT and Computer Centre, they ensure departments throughout the business have the technology and services they need to support the ambitious plans we put in place.

Finally, the fifth team, Governance and Control, is responsible for the risk, governance and control of our transformation and development agenda. They bolster IT security across the organisation and work with the FSA to ensure we are mitigating risk, planning for emergencies and meeting all regulatory requirements.

Graduates

As a graduate you’ll be right in the middle of the action, delivering real business solutions and collaborating with senior executives. In the past, graduates on this programme have supported the management of Nationwide’s top supplier relationships and have managed half million pound portfolios within small change projects. They’ve also helped to update our payments infrastructure, analysed the financial performance of the Nationwide Transformation Portfolio and developed a new customer management system for income protection.

This programme is completely different from other IT graduate schemes. It’s designed to develop each graduate into a future leader, and it supports and monitors your progress every step of the way. You’ll go on various leadership courses and training programmes, and, if relevant, we’ll even help you earn a professional qualification such as PRINCE2 or ICEB. As a result, in five years’ time you could be anything from a Project Manager, responsible for designing and implementing business change across the organisation; to a Service Introduction Manager, responsible for owning the business relationship between IT and our product areas, introducing new systems and processes to completion.

Requirements

To join, you’ll need a 2:1 degree in any discipline and 260 UCAS points (excluding general studies) or the equivalent.

Industrial Placements

If you are studying on a course that requires a year out in industry, we offer 12-month IT & Change Management industrial placements. Over the course of the year you’ll typically undertake three business attachments, and we have the same high expectations of you as we do from those on our graduate programme.

To help you get the most out of it, you’ll be supported by a buddy and a mentor and receive plenty of on-the-job coaching from your line manager and team colleagues. You can expect to develop skills that will not only improve your career prospects but also prove useful during the remainder of your degree studies. And throughout it all we’ll pay you a competitive salary and you’ll be entitled to two days’ holiday per month.
