Training & development

We’re proud of our great reputation for training and development. It’s a reputation that’s earned us an 'Investor in People' accreditation for the fourth time running. And which has made us one of just 36 companies (and the first in the financial services sector) to be awarded 'Investor in People Champion'. That means we’re recognised as an organisation with a best practice approach to training – one that really invests in all its people and helps them learn and grow.

We spend more per person on training than any of our competitors. So whichever area of Nationwide you join, you’ll be encouraged to develop. In fact, completing your core training will be a key part of your role. And that’s true whatever your job title. So you could well find yourself taking part in essential training courses, many of which run for a full day in one of our training centres across the UK. That might involve travelling from wherever you’re based and, if the course lasts more than a day, staying away from home overnight. It’s all part of our investment in you, to help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to do the very best job possible.

Whatever your current skills and work experience, we’ll encourage you to develop. So expect regular training that’s geared to your job and your personal development needs.

It all starts when you enter our ‘Academy’ – a three-month training programme that helps you gain new skills as well as make the most of those you already have. You’ll spend your first two to six weeks in a classroom, getting to grips with the role, the products and the processes. Then you’ll begin taking calls with the help of a mentor and a work-support trainer.

After your initial training, you'll sit down with your manager and draw up a personal training and development plan to help you get to where you want to be. Plus, on top of on-the-job training and coaching, we run trainer-led courses and offer videos, books and workbooks.

Throughout, you’ll have the support of buddies, one-to-ones with your team coordinator and mentoring – all of which will help you do your job more confidently and more effectively.
