Training & development

We’re proud of our great reputation for training and development. It’s a reputation that’s earned us an 'Investor in People' accreditation for the fourth time running. And which has made us one of just 36 companies (and the first in the financial services sector) to be awarded 'Investor in People Champion'. That means we’re recognised as an organisation with a best practice approach to training – one that really invests in all its people and helps them learn and grow.

We spend more per person on training than any of our competitors. So whichever area of Nationwide you join, you’ll be encouraged to develop. In fact, completing your core training will be a key part of your role. And that’s true whatever your job title. So you could well find yourself taking part in essential training courses, many of which run for a full day in one of our training centres across the UK. That might involve travelling from wherever you’re based and, if the course lasts more than a day, staying away from home overnight. It’s all part of our investment in you, to help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to do the very best job possible.

A thorough induction
Whatever your current skills and work experience, we’ll encourage you to develop. So expect regular training that’s geared to your job and your personal development needs.

It all starts with a six to eight week induction to help you gain new skills as well as make the most of those you already have. As you get to grips with the role, the products, the systems and the processes, your confidence will grow. And when you begin taking calls, you’ll have the support of a mentor.

Planning ahead
After your initial training, you'll sit down with your Manager and draw up a personal training and development plan to help you get to where you want to be. Plus, on top of on-the-job training and coaching, we run trainer-led courses and offer videos, books and workbooks.

Throughout, you’ll have regular one-to-ones with your supervisor which will help you do your job more confidently and more effectively.

Something to aim for
You start as a Customer Service Adviser. Pass your six-month probation and you might want to think about your next step up. You can also move into the branch network after you’ve had experience of taking calls for the branches. On top of this we run a Senior Management Development Programme on which you’d shadow a Team Manager for a year in preparation for taking on the role yourself. Another role to aspire to is Business Development Manager, managing the relationship between branches and contact centres.

Nationwide is a recognised Champion of Investors in People - one of only 36 organisations to receive this award.

Online career centre
Through our award-winning intranet site, you can access all sorts of information to help you learn and progress. As well as details of the internal jobs on offer and interview tips, there’s what we call the Development Curve. This is an online career planner – a tool that allows you to map your development across the business. In addition, we each have access to online training courses.
