Our graduate schemes
Our graduate training programme is a scheme with a difference. For one thing, we only take on a small number of graduates each year. This doesn’t just mean that we’re very selective about who we take on (which we are, undoubtedly) – but also means we can devote more time and energy to your training. We call it the Nationwide Management Development Programme (NMDP) because that’s just what we do: we look to develop our graduates into future leaders of the business.
Everyone's experience of the programme varies because of the choice of placement options. Although one recurring theme is that everyone finds it as rewarding as it is challenging - take a look at the video profiles of some people who've been there, done it and made it their own.
Generalist or Specialist?
We’ll give you the choice of a Generalist or Specialist option, both of which are made up of three or four placements, which could be anywhere around the country.
The Generalist scheme gives you experience of lots of different areas of our business including a retail-based position, a role that develops your management and people skills, and an area that uses your project management and consultancy skills.
The Specialist scheme offers you the choice of Central Retail, Commercial, Group Strategy & Planning, Human Resources, Information Security and Business Continuity, Internal Audit, Retail Branch Network, Specialist Lending, Technology and Treasury placements. You'll typically spend two of your placements in your specialist area, and the third doing something different to see another aspect of the business.
Whichever scheme you choose, our aim is the same: to get you started in a career which you'll truly enjoy and in an area where you can give your best and make a difference.
What happens then?
For us, the goal is to help you continue to grow and develop into one of our next generation of senior managers. But of course, it's up to you where you go and what you do. Whatever your ambitions, we'll make them as achievable as we can for you. Our main hope? That you have an enjoyable and rewarding career that makes the most of everything you have to offer.
