It offers students the chance to join a dynamic and exciting business for 12 months, which is responsible for a wide range of finance solutions for a spectrum of clients and where the ability to understand complex, multi-million pound transactions, handle innovative negotiations and provide exceptional relationship management is critical to our success.

Nationwide Commercial operates in 3 main sectors: commercial real estate, affordable housing and project finance. It is structured in to a number of teams, based mainly in our London or Northampton offices, to undertake and support the lending activity:

Commercial Front Office is responsible for handling sales relationships and for originating new business by delivering bespoke finance solutions. Clients include key players in the commercial property market such as specialist property companies, institutional funds and leading PLC’s. We primarily provide senior debt finance across the retail, office, industrial and leisure sectors, with loans ranging from £1m to £300m.

Commercial Middle Office structures and completes the sales sourced by Front Office and then manages the performance of the loan portfolio, currently £13bn, pro-actively seeking opportunities to maximise income and reduce risk.

Commercial Back Office is responsible for providing a robust support platform to ensure the business areas achieve and maintain a competitive advantage in the market place. It supports change and operational risk agendas via process, systems, and technology management. It also adds value by providing high specification, customised loan servicing solutions.

The Housing Finance team lends to housing associations, enabling them to build, purchase and improve properties to rent to people with housing needs at affordable rents. We are a leading funder of Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) throughout the UK with a long history in this sector and over £9.5bn of loan commitments.

The Project Finance team lend primarily to UK based accommodation projects procured under the Government’s Private Finance Initiative. Loans are made available to private consortia to build and operate public infrastructure assets, the use of which the public sector pays for over a period of years. Examples include schools, hospitals, fire stations and social housing.

In addition the important Specialist Support team manages and restructures defaulting loans and those in arrears, whilst the Strategy and Planning and Marketing and Communications teams provide vital support to the business.

The placement will typically involve working in 2 of our core business areas as well as gaining an understanding of the overall business and its strategy. You will be supported by your manager and colleagues and be given challenging and responsible work to undertake and develop your skills.

You will be expecting to achieve a minimum of a 2.1 degree and you will need 260 UCAS points or equivalent. Whilst your degree can be in any discipline we particularly value those degrees likely to provide graduates with the skills and competencies that support working in finance or business.
