Hear from Chris our Treasury Summer Intern
Name: Christopher CraneDegree: Accounting and Financial Management
University: Loughborough University
What was your motivation in applying?
Applying for the role of a summer intern would allow me to gain exposure to Nationwide’s Treasury; this will assist in future career decisions and boost my knowledge and understanding of finance.
What did the application process involve?
Initial screening involved an online application which included a personality test. Two further tests of verbal and numeric reasoning formed the second stage. The final stage is the interview. The interview is the hardest part of the process, but as long as you have researched what Nationwide’s Treasury does, then you will be fine!
What did your placement involve?
I worked along side the structured finance desk within Treasury. A typical task was the monitoring and reporting of purchased assets. Other tasks were more ad hoc, adding value to the team. I was also given the opportunity to work along side other functions which included the Risk Management Division (RMD).
Did you enjoy it?
I thoroughly enjoyed everyday at Nationwide, I had the opportunity to learn new things and meet a great team of people.
What did you learn?
The whole experience was learning, I arrived having no background in Structured Finance or Treasury and I will be leaving with a very thorough understanding.
Best part?
Working with a fantastic team.
Worst part?
One day leaving my house at 6am for a 7am start.
What advice to readers do you have?
Before applying, research the role and why you want to get exposure in such an area, be very clear on this throughout your application. Upon gaining a place, ensure you have an expectation of what you would like to gain from your time. And upon arriving ensure you and your line manager work together to exceed your expectations.
