What attracted you to Nationwide?
I think the main thing that attracted me to Nationwide was the expectations that I had – it fulfilled everything that I wanted. I’d worked for a few companies before and they had not been really everything I had needed. When I heard about Nationwide and I sat down at my first interview the main thing that I wanted was to feel valued, I wanted there to be lots of training available and I wanted them to support me in my career progression and they've completely exceeded everything I wanted with that, so that was the main thing. And they keep on doing well and exceeding every expectation that I have.
How long have you been in your current role?
I have been working in HR for two months now. So far it’s been really good. I’ve done a lot, I’ve learned so much, the training is amazing, all the people I work with are really nice people. I fitted in after two months and I feel like I’ve been there for years. The work is really good – you’re learning all the time and it’s changing all the time as well. And the best thing about it is that you’re having to work with so many different people, areas and branches that you can never be bored in it – it’s really exciting.
How do you see your future at Nationwide?
For my future at Nationwide I am extremely excited because I’ve got so many plans and I think it’s going to be very bright. I’ve already started an action plan and the best thing about Nationwide is that you can go on something called the development curve on Nationwide’s intranet which allows you to plan out what you’re going to be doing in the future and that’s what I’ve done. I know exactly where I’m going, where I want to be and how long it’s going to take to get there. And that’s really the best thing about Nationwide is that you know that you’re going to get where you want to be and that you’re going to be supported 100 per cent.
What would you say to someone who wanted to apply for your job?
I think that if somebody wanted to apply in my position, they have to think about what it is they want from a job - if they’re quite sociable, if they love being part of a team, they want to feel valued in a role, and the main aim of their job, the thing that will give them the most satisfaction is to see an outcome come out good, to be able to follow something through and to be able to go home and just feel that they’ve really made someone’s life different. I think that is definitely a reason for applying for my role.
Has working at Nationwide turned out as you expected, and if not, how has it differed?
I think the thing with Nationwide is that everyone goes in with an idea of how their career is going to pan out. With me I had an idea as to what I wanted to do – I knew that I wanted to be able to help people and to be able to make people happy and I wanted something where I would feel that I was making a difference. It has not turned out exactly how I planned though. I think that I had always assumed that I was going to go into a sales role and now I am working in human resources and I’m still really happy with what I’m doing.
For the future, again I don’t know how my life is going to pan out. I know that I want to be involved in training people and developing people’s potential in the business and I think that might be how it is, but the thing with Nationwide is that you’ve got so many different avenues that you can go down that you might have an idea and then a few months down the line something else might come up and you want to do that. That’s the best thing about it – whatever you want to do, there is an avenue for you, so it’s not how I thought it would pan out and I don’t think it will be how I want it to pan out in the future. It’ll just be everything I want I think and I think it’s definitely going to exceed all the expectations that I have.
My PRIDE item
My mum gave me this watch when I first joined Nationwide, with PRIDE it’s not just about time, it’s not just about turning up, it’s about investing time, it’s about putting in that extra mile to go that extra way just to make sure that people are happy.
