Treasury
What we do
Even the world’s biggest building society needs a banker. Our Treasury Division looks after our money by controlling our cashflow, raising and managing liquidity and wholesale funding, and minimising risk – especially interest rate risk.
As part of this, Treasury works with retail areas to design and price attractive products for the retail network to sell. And it contributes to Group profits by setting up and managing discretionary investment portfolios, and ensuring the best returns are achieved on the Societys’ non-discretionary assets and liabilities under its management.
Treasury plays a major role in corporate projects and provides an interface to the FSA, Bank of England, HMT, as well as the external markets.
How we're structured
People in Treasury work across the following teams.
What we look for
- Significant Treasury experience – in funding, liquidity or derivatives for example
- As an alternative we will also consider those with strong transferable skills from individuals from a non-financial background – such skills include statistical, quantitative and analytical
- Impressive numerical and verbal skills – we ask everyone applying for a Treasury role to take numerical and verbal reasoning tests.
- The confidence and professionalism to liaise with senior executives within the Society and key external stakeholders (including rating agencies and regulators).
Beyond that, different areas of Treasury look for different skills and knowledge.
- Operations looks for people who are meticulous with detail and can cope with high volumes of work
- Middle office – which measures and monitors risk and is home to the divisions modelling team – looks for analytical and technical skills
- Front Office needs people who can spot opportunities to do a deal and create value, while working within a strict control framework.
Your career prospects
We support professional development with a variety of training, including:
- external professional courses
- market seminars
- on-the-job learning
- support to study for relevant professional qualifications such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or the Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) where appropriate.
Small, high profile and extremely influential, Treasury offers you huge scope to develop. Not only will you get a real insight into the way both the Society and the wider markets operate. If you're a manager, you'll also work closely with the Board and senior executives across the business as you advise on and help generate policy and strategy.
Where you’d work
Treasury is based in our Northampton Head Office, although frequent travel to the Swindon Head Office and the City is not uncommon.
