Michelle, Assistant Manager, Project Finance

I joined Nationwide in 1998 with great customer service experience but no background in finance or banking. I was ready for a complete change of direction though and Nationwide really attracted me. Not only is it one of the largest employers in the local area; it also has an excellent reputation with members and employees alike, ranking highly in the top companies to work for.  Plus it’s very good at developing its people - its ‘Investors in People Champion’, Gold accreditation, is proof of that.

I’ve picked up so many skills in my time with Nationwide: understanding and interpreting accounts, report writing, financial analysis, influencing and negotiation to name a few. I’ve had full support for all the training I’ve completed including sponsorship for qualifications like the AAT in Accounting and CeMAP.

Right now I’m Assistant Lending Manager in Project Finance which offers structured finance facilities to help fund infrastructure projects.  It’s a rewarding role because these projects make a real difference to local communities. I work with fantastic people who are extremely knowledgeable in this sector and always happy to share their know-how. And my role varies day to day. Those are just a few of the reasons why I look forward to coming to work every day.

I’m also proud of the things that set us apart from our competitors and make us recognised as key players in the commercial sector.  We have a reputation for being open, honest and trustworthy with the ability to deliver.  We focus on building rewarding, long-term relationships. We’re constantly aiming to exceed expectations and deliver a more professional, responsive service than the banks. And we’re passionate about making our members better off.

In short, I think at Nationwide we do things properly. And that gives us the opportunity to realise our own ambitions as well as those of the businesses we support.
