My goal back in 1989 was to join an organisation with a superb reputation for developing its staff and doing the right thing for its customers. Feedback from family and friends strongly recommended Nationwide as an organisation that could be trusted and one that had a reputation for offering innovative and competitive products and services. Nationwide was very much seen as the ‘Consumer Champion’ in the UK Financial Services sector.
And it still is. The people here are dedicated and committed to constantly improving the customer experience and working practices. That, in turn, helps differentiate us from our competitors. Nationwide is seen as best in class for delivering consistently top quality customer service to its customers and business partners. Our clear corporate values and unique cultural DNA give us a very distinct competitive advantage – and make us a fun and rewarding place to work.
My role is all about the effective relationship management of Commercial customers and delivering key strategic Divisional projects. This includes managing existing and new high-net-worth individuals and helping them deliver their operational business plans. It calls for close working partnerships to achieve mutually beneficial results. A key priority is to clearly identify, understand and address customer needs and then formulate strategies – involving, for instance, loan extensions or new lending & asset management – that will satisfy those needs while complying with regulations. I also work with teams across the organisation, external agents and senior stakeholders within Commercial to make systems and processes more efficient and exploit new product markets. So I’m never short of challenge or variety.
The fact I’ve had a number of roles at Nationwide has helped me capitalise on advanced coaching techniques to develop teams and individuals. And, in turn, that’s boosted my leadership and people management skills.
Nationwide is very pro self-development and, at various points, I’ve had support to complete a Master’s degree, a Diploma In Management Studies and various industry benchmark qualifications like CeMAP and FPC. My core dissertations were based on solving real organisational problems. You do need to be very driven and disciplined to juggle your day job with your studies but it’s definitely worth it. If you have the desire and passion to succeed, then Commercial division is flexible and diverse enough to nurture your potential.
