Toby, Commercial Deposits Manager

After my Economics degree, I spent a couple of years teaching English as a second language in Japan and China before joining Nationwide’s graduate training programme in 2006. The programme was a fantastic chance to get an overview of Nationwide as I worked in the retail branch network, Nationwide’s debt collection function and the Commercial Division.  I got a permanent position in Commercial’s Strategy and Planning team in 2008. My main task was to help the Divisional Director write the five-year strategy plan as well as research and prepare presentations for senior stakeholders including the FSA and the Board.

I wanted to work for a company I could be proud of and was attracted to Nationwide’s strong brand. As well as that I grew up saving my pocket money in the Group’s ‘Smart 2 Save’ account and was keen to see what it was like from the other side of the counter. Now I help design and manage business savings accounts. It’s fascinating, challenging work – but I’ve been well prepared for it.

For example, when I was designing new products and managing projects from concept through to launch, I felt I could improve my project management skills. As well as arranging coaching from experienced project managers, Nationwide sponsored me to take the Prince 2 project management qualification. I’ve also benefited from broader training – both internal and external – including sponsorship to complete the CFA Programme and the chance to put my new skills into practice. I like the challenge of defining which development areas I need to focus on, discussing what training will support this and showing how these new skills are adding value to the business.

A recent highlight was being selected for Nationwide Commercial’s Academy. This is designed for strong performers with the potential to develop fast. I have a comprehensive development plan that includes learning sessions with executive directors as well as meetings with external stakeholders such as the British Bankers Association.  Those of us in the Academy are also working on a plan to strengthen the Commercial business by improving customer experience. It’s a packed, fluid agenda that I find really stretching. And it’s perfect preparation for the next step in my career.
