Nationwide Commercial is one of the UK’s top commercial lenders.  Our originations team is organised into three main areas: Commercial Finance, Housing Finance and Project Finance. And each of these areas is expertly underpinned by support functions that comprise of Customer Management, Relationship Management, Specialised Support, Service & Support and Strategy & Planning.

Find out more about what the different areas of our originations team do.

Commercial Property Finance

Commercial Property Finance offers flexible finance solutions to help customers buy or refinance retail, office, industrial, leisure and residential property. Its customers range from major public limited companies and high-net-worth individuals to institutional funds and specialist property firms. As a result, it has a loan book of over £12bn.

On offer is exceptional debt expertise along with sound, prudent appraisals of commercial funding proposals and competitive finance packages. But much more than that, customers can be sure of an open, frank approach and dedicated support every step of the way.

Housing Finance

We made our first loan to a housing association back in 1958. Now we’re a leading lender to affordable housing providers, and the first to commit over £9bn to this sector. And although we’ve seen big changes in the housing market over the last fifty plus years, one thing hasn’t changed and that’s our commitment to delivering the best funding solutions possible. Our building society values too have made us the first choice for many housing providers and Registered Social Landlords. With our mutual status and corporate social responsibility initiatives, it seems we share the same philosophy as our customers.

Project Finance

Project Finance provides the funds that build schools, roads, hospitals, social housing and much more. Indeed, since 1998, our Project Finance team has committed over £1.5bn to more than 80 separate projects in the UK PFI/PPP sector. Now we’re one of the market leaders in UK Social Infrastructure projects.

We’re successful in what we do because of the way we do it. Dedicated deal teams work on each project and tailor-make funding solutions to meet specific needs. We’re constantly reinforcing our reputation for consistently innovative funding solutions. And when the parameters of a project change, we have the flexibility and resources to adapt our approach to suit.

Our values

Our business is founded on strong relationships. We’re proud of the number we’ve built and the number of years they’ve lasted. A lot of that is down to our building society values. This is what customers can expect from us – and what we’ll count on you to deliver.

  • Prudent, open and frank lending
  • Straight talking
  • Acting on the facts
  • Integrity and reliability
  • Competence and expertise including local expertise
  • Commitment and dedication

Lucy

I joined Nationwide four months ago and prior to that I was at university.

Abdul

I’ve been at Nationwide for six years now, having joined in 2005 on the Management Development Programme.

Lucy

I relocated to Northampton for my job at Nationwide. I feel that I’ve settled into the town very nicely, and I’ve also settled in very well at work.

Darren

I’ve been with Nationwide now for 13 years, and prior to that I worked at National Australia Group. The culture and working environment at Nationwide I would describe as being balanced, purposeful and inclusive.

Abdul

The attraction for Commercial within Nationwide was really the opportunity to work with large exposures and the glitz of multi-million pound transactions.

Julie

I would describe the culture and working environment at Nationwide as very professional. We have very high personal standards, we expect a lot of each other. It is competitive, but we have fun along the way as well.

Lucy

I was attracted to working for Commercial at Nationwide, because it’s effectively a business within itself – it’s got its own marketing team and its own legal team. So I thought the breadth and the variety of the experience that I’d get within Commercial would be great.

Julie

The best thing about Nationwide, I think, are its values. That is internally, in terms of how it treats its staff, but also externally in terms of how it treats its customers.

Lucy

It’s a very professional environment. Each individual has accountability for their own work.

Darren

The things that we value and consider to be important are different. Other organisations might pay lip service, but when Nationwide says it’s on your side, the customer can really believe we’re on their side.

Abdul

The best thing about my job in Commercial has to be the variety.

Darren

The results matter – but it’s also important how you go about getting those results.

Abdul

Every transaction has its own quirks – the people that you meet, both colleagues and clients. And it’s nice to do something which is, in a way, unpredictable.

Julie

The animal that I would like to be would have to be a giraffe, because I’ve always wanted long legs and long eyelashes!

Abdul

The ferocity and strength of a Bengal tiger.

Lucy

Ha! I’m going to have to make something up.

Darren

A wolf!

Julie

My most memorable day at Nationwide was when I found out that I was Employee of the Year in 2004. It was a fantastic achievement just to be nominated – I was nominated by 15 of my colleagues – but to go on and win was the icing on the cake really.

Lucy

Being selected to go and meet some of the executive directors and a famous politician, where I had the opportunity to discuss and share opinions on the current economic climate.

Abdul

I think the thing that I would have really have liked to have known is perhaps the realisation that work doesn’t have to be only about work, and that there’s more to it. Here, in Nationwide Commercial, we often get involved in charity events where you can really roll your sleeves up and get involved, and it’s a chance to have fun and do something extra.

Julie

I wish I’d known the true extent of the development opportunities in Nationwide, because when I started in a branch, you just think this is my branch and it forms part of an area, and it was only when I moved into Commercial and came into the Head Office environment that you realise there really are lots of opportunities out there for you to develop, to go outside your comfort zone and to learn new skills.
