I joined Nationwide in 1996 straight out of university. I knew Nationwide was a good local employer and offered excellent prospects. I had always wanted to work for a larger organisation as my goal was to develop my commercial awareness, study for my accountancy exams and by doing a great job work my way up. And that's what I've done.

I started in the pensions department, spending a year in the financial accounting team before moving on to management accounting. That gave me a good grounding at the beginning of my career while allowing me to get my letters. From there I progressed to Senior Accountant in Specialist Lending, Assistant Finance Manager in Retail and Finance Manager supporting a number of different areas of the business. Now I'm a Senior Executive in charge of the Financial aspects supporting everything from strategic plans, large third-party tenders, stress testing, product pricing and income generation work. I was also part of the team that put together a major successful acquisition deal.

What I enjoy most is the variety of the work and being able to influence major decisions. And even though I've been approached for jobs outside Nationwide I've chosen to stay thanks to the fact that I work in a challenging, forward looking organisation that gives me very good opportunity to develop my career.

The culture here is both collaborative and challenging - and there's no doubt about either the value of Finance to the business or the career potential. After all, our current Chief Executive and six other executive and divisional directors are accountants.
