What we do

Group Strategy and Planning helps the Board develop Corporate Strategy and produce the Corporate Plan. We do this by:

  • working with all divisions across the Group to develop strategies and plans that support business objectives
  • analysing the economic and market conditions in which we operate
  • analysing market trends and new activity both across our competitors and our product areas
  • leading all merger, acquisition and disposal activity across the Group
  • supporting many parts of the business on specific projects such as capital management and analysis of the mortgage market.

We are also well known as commentators on the Housing market with the House Price and Consumer Confidence Indices. Martin Gabhauer, our Chief Economist, is widely quoted in the press, helping to maintain Nationwide’s reputation for an informed and expert view of the housing market.

On top of this we support the CEO and other Directors to research and prepare presentations on a wide range of business issues.

The team is headed by a Divisional Director who currently has three direct reports.

  • Head of Economic and Market Analysis – leads the team of economists and business analysts who work on markets, the economy and competitors.
  • Head of Group Planning – leads the development of the corporate planning activity and supports the divisional director by project managing a number of initiatives.
  • Head of Strategic Projects – leads all merger, acquisition and disposal activity across the Group.

The whole team is relatively small and consists of people who combine both broad and specialist skills. The attitude and skills are such that the team can quickly deliver against any changing markets or business needs.

We mainly recruit Economists and Analysts who analyse mortgage and savings markets, the economy and the competitive environment that we operate in. Their input ensures managers can make informed decisions.

You’ll need to be highly numerate with an economics or business related degree and a background in economics, investment banking or finance.

We also look for experience of delivering complex market and business analysis, including investigating and monitoring the various strategies of competitors. The ability to spot the implications for our own strategy is essential – as is a flair for communicating these results to all levels of management.

Work in the Group Strategy & Planning team and you’ll discover how our own corporate strategy is developed as well as learn about the dynamics of our markets.
You could take the knowledge and the skills you develop and apply them in a specific business area – in one of our product teams for instance. Or you could opt to stay in the department and continue to specialise in a specific role, such as Economist. Before long you could be presenting economic forecasts and advising internal business areas and committees.

You’d be based in our Swindon Head Office but may well travel occasionally to some of our other sites.
