Peter, Assistant Derivatives Dealer
I was studying for an Engineering degree and during that time I did
an internship with an aerospace company. However, realising the industry wasn’t for me, I joined Nationwide straight from university.
Nationwide stood out not only because it is the largest local employer, but also because of its excellent reputation – at the time I graduated, in 2008, the markets were in turmoil and Nationwide was seen as something of a ‘white knight’, not only surviving the crisis but also taking other mutuals on board.
I’ve never looked back. My job here means I’m regularly engaging with major stakeholders and making suggestions that support high-level decision making. I can be digesting the economic news and calendar in the morning, followed by looking at retail products and hedging. Then in the afternoon I can be working on projects and new initiatives for the desk, all coupled with conference calls and meetings in between. It can be pressurised and you need to be on your toes. But as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
The big difference here would have to be the people. You feel like you can turn to anyone for help and it will never be a problem. Put simply, everyone seems to be smiling a lot more and that makes for a great atmosphere.
What music do you listen to?
Lots of soul and jazz to soothe the mind and Mr Marley to get into the groove.
What do you like doing outside of work?
I enjoy travelling and the great outdoors – climbing, cycling, water-rafting and even sphering to name just a few.
If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you bought?
If it was the Euromillions jackpot, I’d buy a 20-seater customised plane which had bedrooms aboard and I’d use it to fly across the Atlantic anytime I wanted.
What’s your favourite flavour ice cream?
Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough. I once bought five tubs when it was on offer in the supermarket. It took me about one and half weeks to gobble them all up.
