Data Lineage Small

Revealing the past - the importance of data lineage

Lineage is a map of the journey between source, transformation and destination of data items. Some experts have likened it to a family tree, revealing ancestry. In the same way that it takes time and work to trace your family tree, finding out where data has come from is challenging.

So why is it important to data engineers?

Determining where to start

Data is crucial for a business to survive. In complex companies, it is not always clear where data can be sourced from and, more importantly, how reliable that data is. Data Lineage mapping can give a clear understanding of where data is stored, how it is stored and what the transformation journey is into downstream systems.

Reducing duplication

When a data project is sourcing data, a data lineage map can reduce the potential for duplicated data sources. Without this map, duplication is likely, with its attendant costs and risks.

Successful maintenance

If you have a complex set of systems with significant data being parsed between them, data lineage mapping is incredibly important to ensure that successful maintenance can be undertaken. The lineage should show the source, transformation journey and the target stores. The change process can then be implemented far more efficiently.

If you want to get somewhere, consult a map. If you want a successful data engineering project, have a data lineage map!

The Automation Imperative

When an organization is trying to deploy Big Data projects, it’s not unusual for them to take several months before reaching production, if they ever do at all. It doesn’t have to be like this though, if you can eliminate the many challenges that extend the project timeline. Key to this is to automate away the complexity of manual hand-offs and simplify the project deployment. Rob Kellaway, Head of Design explores the way forward.

Rising To The Challenge

Big Data is a complex animal. Processing unstructured data can be a challenging but the best data engineers know the most efficient way of reducing the inherent complexity.

Simply loading data from existing data sources into Hadoop can typically require a lot of manual, hand-written code. This is obviously not as efficient as data engineers would want it to be. It is a better use of resources to employ data automation software designed specifically to handle data ingestion.

Likewise, automation software is necessary when data loads need to track lineage, due to audit requirements. The data flowing into a Data Lake needs to be governed, even if it can be unstructured.
Automation can help eliminate many of the more tedious aspects of data engineers’ roles and allows data engineers to be more productive.

The final key point here is that automation also facilitates portability of data between systems, which is a huge benefit when you typically see systems being changed every couple of years.

Building Legendary Service

At Nationwide, we are investing significantly in people and technology to increase the value of our data. We recognise data engineering is a key component of our Data Strategy.

IT Woman

Nationwide continues to invest in new technology. As part of this investment, we’ve established data labs so we can innovate and develop new data science capabilities in a collaborative environment. Paul Todd, Data Labs Lead, explains how they help in achieving our core mission, to generate significant value from the data we have access to.

Data Labs?

Data labs is a more recent term in the big data and data science world. Its importance can’t be overstated,
because it can be a fast route to uncovering value in new big data, as well as in business data.

The data lab is a separate environment built to allow our analysts and data scientists to determine the value hidden in our data. The data lab helps us find the right questions to ask and put the answers to work generating value for our members.

The Value of Data Labs

  • They facilitate flexibility and the capability to quickly build actionable reports in any number of formats. Such reports may be enough to set off further questions that would support the legendary service we look for at Nationwide;
  • They enable existing applications and processes to be changed to facilitate greater efficiency. The ability to quickly test use cases within the lab environment means improved agility and efficiency;
  • They enable insight to be generated in the data that is quite new. From the labs, we can now identify specific members and create a new service or product that will engage in a different way in order to benefit them.
