The Scheme

For those who don't want to go to university after A-levels, our IT Degree Apprenticeship is a direct and affordable route into a career in IT. 

HOME 1

What you’ll do

The scope is wide and we’ll work with you to find what best suits your interests and abilities. You could be dealing with the Cyber Security opportunities and challenges presented by Open Banking and new technologies, enhancing user experience or dealing with live incidents. Equally, you might find yourself supporting ongoing innovation, working with Data & Analytics or improving your coding skills to improve our service and build new applications.

What apprenticeships do you offer?

Level 4 – Networking Engineer 

You will work within the Network Engineering team developing functional and technical solutions and working with cutting edge technology to support our members. At the end of your apprenticeship, you will receive a BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT for Register of IT Technicians (RITTech) level 4 qualification.  

Level 6 Digital Technology Solutions – specialising in either Data Analysis or Software Engineering 

 You’ll develop your knowledge of information infrastructure, data management, cyber security, and IT project management. Then at stage two of the apprenticeship you’ll specialise in either Data Analysis or Software Engineering. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will have completed a BSc (Hons) in Digital & Technology Solutions. 

 Level 6 – User Experience/User Interface Junior Engineer  

You’ll develop your knowledge and understanding of user experience and digital system design. The programme will specifically enable you to develop, update, extend and deepen your knowledge, technical, behavioural, and contextual competence to excel as a digital user experience professional. At the end of your Apprenticeship, you will have a BSc in Digital Experience.

IT Degree Apprentice wins silver

Congratulations to James who came second place in this last year’s Apprentice of the Year.

Engineering Manager, Denis Lewis, said, ‘James is an excellent example of how we can take an individual with potential and provide a safe learning environment in which they can develop. From day one at Nationwide, he has been undertaking real work and adding real business value. The Apprentice of the Year achievement is a well-deserved reflection of this’.

James has been in the SI Squad from the point he joined the Apprenticeship scheme almost two years ago. During that time, he has significantly expanded his knowledge and experience within this area.

He started off supporting the Design Authority, taking minutes in meetings, to gain an understanding of Design and how the components of the platform fit together to deliver performant solutions. Soon after he moved into the performance engineering function within the Squad.

James joined this team with no knowledge of performance engineering, but his thirst for knowledge has served him well. He started off being given specific tasks to complete but has grown to a point where he is using accountable freedom to influence his work. 

This was reflected in his Star of the Month award (Feb 2019) within the SI Squad, his Fresh Perspective award nomination at the Annual Awards, his performance rating for 2018/19 and now his second place in Degree Apprentice of the Year.

Where could it lead?

You could be promoted into a technical specialist role in an area such as Software Engineering, Security, Infrastructure or Online/Mobile Banking. Later you could move into a senior technical specialist role, or into management within the IT community.

As well as a paid job from day one, and the nationally recognised Digital & Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship qualification, you are:

  • Part of a network of people - other Apprentices, but also Graduates and Industrial Placement students.
  • Encouraged to consult and collaborate with a wide variety of people giving you the perfect opportunity to build your knowledge.
  • Trained in additional soft skills such as Influencing, Presentation Skills, Self-Awareness and Communication.
  • Eligible for performance-based bonuses and employee benefits
  • Supported by a Scheme Manager, buddies and mentors throughout the Apprenticeship

 

All the TDP schemes are designed to give:

  • Depending on the area, work towards professional certification in areas such as CompTIA+, Network+, Security+ and more

About you

We’re looking for people who want to develop a career in IT, and have the passion and determination to grow, develop and learn. Ideally, candidates also:

Have a background in a STEM subject

Can pay attention to detail while understanding the bigger picture

Are natural problem solvers

Have what it takes to build and maintain strong working relationships

About the application process

Most applications will go through four key stages before we make a decision. The process is broadly as below although we sometimes tweak it so this is a guide:

Step 1 Submit your CV and complete an online application form. 

Step 2 Complete 2 Digital Readiness online tests. These consist of a working memory ability assessment and a personality assessment.

Step 3 If you’re shortlisted after the online tests, we’ll arrange a 20-minute engagement call to ask you about your motivation for applying, your interest in Technology and your IT role preference.

Step 4 The final stage is an assessment centre with assessors from the business. This comprises an interview and individual exercise.
