We need

  • A Senior Counsel to advise on Property related matters, based in our Head Offices in Swindon.
  • Salary £54,231 - £88,126 per year (dependent on skills and experience), plus cash allowance of £4656 and competitive benefits package, based on a full time, 12 Month Fixed Term Contract.

Who we're looking for

As a minimum requirement you'll need to;

  • Be an England & Wales qualified solicitor or barrister with strong academic and private practice credentials and/or in-house experience, gained within the commercial real estate and/or residential property sector.
  • Have expertise in, and extensive experience of advising on a wide variety of property related matters.
  • Have a good working knowledge of the UK Finance Mortgage Lenders Handbook, Land Registration, general conveyancing practice and commercial Landlord & Tenant work.
  • Be someone who can inspire and motivate the people who work with you.
  • Be able to build relationships across the business and become a trusted advisor, providing expert, commercially pragmatic, timely, succinct and cost-effective legal advice.
  • Be able to consider matters from different perspectives, thinking beyond a narrow legal analysis and about whether something is right and fair for Nationwide’s members.

It would be nice, but not essential if you:-

  • Had some knowledge of the Scottish and/or Northern Irish property legal systems.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be a senior lawyer in the Retail Legal team supporting Property Services, Mortgages and Property Risk business areas, providing advice on all the legal issues, risks and developments on in relation to both property related matters arising from the management of Nationwide’s commercial property portfolio (including branches and offices) and its residential mortgages. In doing so, you’ll work closely with and manage a panel of external lawyers.

You’ll use your expertise to draft legal documentation, such as instructions to solicitors and template transactional documentation, and advise on and influence property related processes and policies, such as conveyancing and panel management processes and lending policies. You’ll also support the development of new mortgage related products, services and processes in the digital age. As well as overseeing Nationwide’s own property transactions (branch acquisitions & disposals and lease renewals etc.), you’ll also respond to queries on specific residential mortgage cases.

You’ll keep an eye on what’s on the horizon by monitoring any changes in legislation, regulation and the wider market. Using that knowledge and insight, you’ll help shape our processes, products and ensure our policies, procedures and literature evolve in line with changing requirements. You’ll anticipate where future legal problems and issues are most likely to arise and devise effective controls to mitigate them.
