Job description

  • Bristol & Swindon location (split site)

Right now, we’re looking for an UX Researcher to join our growing Service & Experience Design team. We’ll need you to be infectiously passionate about UX Research and all things UX related. You’re likely to be a UX researcher early in your career, looking for an opportunity to join a growing UX Research team to develop and expand your UX Research experience.

You’ll be in good company with a Service & Experience Design team who are taking the lead in defining and creating exceptional member-focused experiences across Nationwide. We’re building a best-in-class design and research capability to deepen our understanding of our members’ ever-changing needs, expectations and behaviour, and put design thinking at the heart of all that we do. Our role in S&ED is to join the dots across all channels and services to make things better for our members. For legendary service and memorable experiences that deliver on our business and society-building ambitions and make a real difference to our members’ lives. It’s no small feat but we’re lucky enough to have a team of 60+ Researchers, UX Designers, UI Designers and Content Designers working together to make it happen – not to mention in-house research facilities, great perks and a culture to be proud of.

And we’re building our Society with new perspectives, diverse backgrounds and richly varied experience and that’s where you come in…

Who we're looking for

To join the team as UX Researcher, you’ll need

  • Practical experience of planning, running and presenting UX Research, including usability research
  • Experience of creating research briefs and participant screeners
  • Experience of working in UX Research as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Great verbal and written communication skills and willingness to learn
  • Natural curiosity – you love to learn and delve into what really makes people engage with experiences and to understand their needs and motivations
  • A broad knowledge of User-Centred Design as well as UX processes and principles
  • Great relationship building skills – you understand the importance of  building great relationships and connections with stakeholders from across the business to get buy-in for UX research

If you have any of the following, even better:

  • Conducting UX research within agile ways of working
  • Working with 3rd party participant recruitment companies
  • Accessibility
  • Experience of quantitative research

What you'll be doing

It’s an exciting time for UX Research at Nationwide as we build and develop our UX research function. As UX Researcher, you could find yourself working on an exciting new proposition or delivering UX Research for one of our Agile Hubs. Working with a Senior UX Researcher, you’ll assist in scoping, shaping and conducting UX research. You’ll help us find engaging and innovative ways of presenting research findings and in demonstrating the value of UX research.

You’ll be using a range of UX research methodologies to help us understand and design for the needs of our members. From discovery research through to service optimisation, we want you to be involved in all parts of the UX research process. One day you may be running a usability evaluation or conducting ethnography research in one of our branches or contact centres; another day you could analysing research findings or scoping out a diary study. This will be a varied role and we’ll encourage you to try new techniques and help us to develop new ways of working too.

We work in a multi-disciplinary environment so you’ll be collaborating closely with Product Owners, the wider UX and UI teams, Developers, Content Design, Analysts and other Researchers.

The scope of projects you may be involved in spans the entire digital estate and multiple service touch points (including, mobile, branch, ATM, etc.). so there will be no shortage of opportunities for you to develop your UX Research skills across a broad range of member experiences.

We want you to have opportunities to grow and develop your UX research skills, so while you’ll have the support of more senior researchers, we’ll also encourage and support you to lead on research initiatives and try new things. You’ll also have the benefit of being mentored and supervised by a UX Research Manager who’ll ensure you make the most of your potential by developing and supporting you.

The extras you'll get

As part of our team, you’ll receive the kind of great benefits you’d expect from the world’s largest building society. These include:

  • Access to training to help you progress and develop your technical skills and career
  • Pension scheme where if you pay in 7% we’ll top it up to 23%
  • 24 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
  • The ability to 'buy’ up to 10 days more holiday
  • Access to annual performance related bonus scheme
  • Flexible benefits scheme
