Right now, we’re looking for a Senior Design Researcher to join our growing Service & Experience Design team. We’ll need you to be infectiously passionate about Design Research and all things UX related. You’re likely to be a Design/UX Researcher with experience in leading and running research, and looking for an opportunity to join a growing Design Research team to develop and expand your senior research experience. The role can be based in our Swindon office and has the option of working remotely too.
You’ll be in good company with a Service & Experience Design team who are taking the lead in defining and creating exceptional member-focused experiences across Nationwide. We’re building a best-in-class design and research capability to deepen our understanding of our members’ ever-changing needs, expectations and behaviour, and put design thinking at the heart of all that we do. We research, we iterate, we craft, we strive – and we do it all to make sure our members have experiences that are memorable, for all the right reasons, on every channel.
What you’ll be doing
It’s an exciting time for Design Research at Nationwide as we build and develop our Design Research function. As Senior Design Researcher, you could find yourself working on an exciting new proposition or managing and delivering Design Research for one of our Agile Hubs. Working with stakeholders from across the business, you’ll scope and shape research plans that support both the needs of our users and the business, ensuring the quality and efficiency of Design Research. You’ll be working collaboratively with key stakeholders to ensure buy-in and understanding of Design research. We’d also look to you to provide Design Research mentoring and coaching to colleagues within the Service and Experience Design and to others across the business.

You’ll help us find engaging and innovative ways of presenting research findings and in demonstrating the value of Design Research.
You’ll be using a range of Design Research methodologies to help us understand and design for the needs of our members. From discovery research through to service optimisation, we want you to be involved in all parts of the Design Research process.
One day you may be running a usability evaluation or conducting ethnography research in one of our branches or contact centres; another day you could be analysing research findings or scoping out a new proposition evaluation study. This will be a varied role and we’ll encourage you to try new techniques and help us to develop new ways of working too.
We work in a multi-disciplinary environment so you’ll be collaborating closely with Product and Proposition Owners, the wider UX and UI teams, Developers, Content Design, Analysts and other Researchers.
The scope of projects you may be involved in spans the entire digital estate and multiple service touch points (including natiowide.co.uk, mobile, branch, ATM, etc.). so there will be no shortage of opportunities for you to develop your Design Research skills across a broad range of member experiences.
We want you to have opportunities to grow and develop your Design Research skills, so while you’ll have the support of other senior researchers, we’ll also encourage and support you to lead on research initiatives and try new things. You’ll also have the benefit of being mentored and supervised by a Design Research Manager who’ll ensure you make the most of your potential by developing and supporting you.
To join the team as Senior Design Researcher, you’ll need
- Practical experience of leading Design Research at a senior level, ideally across projects that have multiple workstreams
- In-depth experience of Design Research strategy and planning
- Hands-on experience across a broad range of Design Research methodologies, both generative and evaluative
- Experience of working in Design Research as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Examples of where you have demonstrated the value of Design Research
- Great verbal and written communication skills
- A broad knowledge of User-Centred Design as well as UX processes and principles
- Great relationship building skills – you understand the importance of building great relationships and connections with stakeholders from across the business to get buy-in for Design Research
- Delivering research with a focus on business outcomes as well as user needs
- Experience in coaching and mentoring others in Design Research approaches and strategy
If you have any of the following, even better:
- Conducting Design Research within agile ways of working
- Research for Vulnerability, Accessibility and Inclusivity Experience of quantitative research
- Design Research at a service and proposition level
