The Analytics Hub sits in a new, data-led community within Nationwide Building Society that provides advanced analytic and data science-based solutions to all areas of the Society.  The Hub’s focus is to drive member value by providing solutions to real business problems that directly improve customer experience and drive efficiency in our data processing systems, by identifying potential new product offerings through member-focused personalization, and by using employee feedback to achieve the ambition statements of our People and Culture Community .  The business demand for using analytics to innovate solutions is growing, so you’ll be able to grow and flourish with us in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that delivers real value.

 

Who we're looking for

We are looking for a Lead Data Scientist who has demonstratable industry expertise, a rich understanding of the mathematical/statistical techniques utilized in developing advanced analytics and data science solutions, and strong interpersonal qualities, including the ability to coach people on methodologies and techniques while proactively bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the team.

 

As a minimum, you’ll:

•Have a Masters or PhD in maths, statistics, computer science, physics, economics or related field.

•Understand the foundational elements of using advanced analytics and data science to problem solve (e.g. Linear Algebra, Multivariable Statistics, Support Vector Machines, Decision Trees, Timeseries Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Geospatial Analysis, Random Forests, Hidden Markov Models, Stochastic Calculus, Artificial Neural Networks, etc.).

•Have first rate communication skills that allow you to describe the details of your approaches through the aid of visualizations and data story telling for a wide variety of stakeholders.

•Have experience with different data storage systems (relational databases, Hadoop, NoSQL) and have worked with unstructured data.

•Have a passion for creating innovative solutions and advocating new ideas, spotting opportunities, and learning the latest research trends along the way.

•Experience of SAS EM, VA/VS, productionising solutions, and PySpark would be beneficial.

What you'll be doing

You will be supporting the analytics agendas of a variety of communities wherein you’ll be able to understand the difficulties they face and identify improvements. You will identify and frame analytics use cases for members of the hub and guide them to completion, implementing and advising on the best techniques to do so.  You will be responsible for upskilling and coaching less experienced data scientists who will be eager to take direction and learn from your expertise.  You’ll have a dedicated data engineering team that will help you leverage data for research and analytics purposes as well as fast track use case productionalisation to maximize the value of the team’s efforts.  

 

Because the Analytics Hub supports all of the analytics and insights of Nationwide Building Society, whether you are working within the Hub or developing one of its many spokes, the data you use will be varied and multi-faceted and span many different business opportunities, and the insights you generate along the way will provide a rich variety of value.  A key part of your role will be to seek out potential sources of data to use to enrich the analyses that you will help shape and to identify opportunities to achieve an overall richness of insight and approach.  You will work closely with senior business stakeholders and will build relationships across the Society.  With your ability to communicate complicated concepts to stakeholders possessing different levels of familiarity with your field,  you will help shape the analytics agendas for multiple subcommunities within Nationwide and help shape the culture of using data effectively to drive member value.  With a newly appointed Director of Analytics, Nationwide is investing in building an Advanced Analytics capability and your position is integral to shaping how this function will support Nationwide in achieving its data driven ambitions.
