Lead Policy and Public Affairs Manager

You’ll provide public policy insight and expertise to the Society, particularly on financial services and sustainability issues. As well as providing policy expertise you’ll help create and deliver a public affairs and campaigns programme to build the reputation and influence of the Society and to advance its objectives with governmental, parliamentary and public policy stakeholders.

What you’ll be doing

  • You’ll be responsible for developing Nationwide’s public policy positions across a wide range of significant issues to ensure the consistent development, agreement and communication of the Society’s priorities. There will be a particular focus on financial services regulation and sustainability.
  • Providing public policy insight and expertise to internal stakeholders, up to and including the Chief Executive and key Board committees..
  • Supporting and coordinating senior-level engagement with national and local government, the UK Parliament, devolved administrations and other organisations such as trade bodies, consumer groups and think tanks.
  • Preparing high quality Nationwide briefing papers, policy documents, responses to official consultations and commercial publications on all relevant issues.
  • Play a key role in wider campaigns alongside colleagues from other teams including media relations, internal comms and social investment which build the Society’s reputation and influence with governmental, parliamentary and public policy stakeholders


About you

  • Significant practical experience of policy and public affairs and a track record of successfully influencing senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of working in Government or for a regulator and experience of working on financial services issues and/or green finance/sustainability would be desirable
  • A strong external network, with the capability of building this further, and a clear ability to work with and lead cross-functional teams internally to deliver results.
  • Politically aware with an excellent working knowledge of the domestic and European public policy, regulatory and legislative processes.
  • Able to quickly recognise potential policy, regulatory and political risks and opportunities to the Society’s brand and reputation and devise and implement strategies that minimise/exploit emerging issues.
  • Very articulate with excellent presentational skills, both written and verbal, using all modern forms of technology.
  • Able to communicate effectively at executive level and secure the confidence of senior colleagues
