15 million members. One world-class engineering team.
Nationwide Building Society has always delivered great service in new ways: for example, we were one of the first UK financial services providers to provide online banking. Now we want to extend and unify our service for our members and our colleagues, helping us keep and extend our lead as the nation’s best regarded building society.
For members are at the core of Nationwide. We’re not a bank: we’re owned by our members, and they expect us to give the amazing service they’re accustomed to.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
As an engineer working with Future of Legendary Service, you’ll be at the heart of helping our members. You’ll help create the front-end systems used by millions of people right across the UK. It’ll be your code that runs in the apps that our members trust when they make payments from Nationwide accounts. And it’s your code that will help one in ten house buyers in the UK buy somewhere they can call home.
We’re looking for engineers with passion, creativity, determination and enthusiasm that will help us uncover the best ways of delivering value in the future. Right now our technology stack includes app development in Swift and Kotlin, server-side work in Node and .NET Core, and infrastructure in Kubernetes and Terraform – but what will you suggest we use for the future?
Our teams are close knit, friendly and sociable. You can expect to work alongside experts in mortgages, banking, payments, risk and CRM, as well as colleagues who understand how our branch systems work and how best to deliver exceptional service. Above all, we’ll give you the accountable freedom you’ll need to propose and deliver the best solution for our members.
We understand that learning is essential for us to grow as engineers, so we’ll provide access to Pluralsight and Degreed courses, together with subscriptions to developer portals, regular training courses, and the time that you need to learn. There are plenty of opportunities for you to teach, too.
For the role of Build Engineer, we expect you to have skills in the following:
- Scripted build and release pipelines using technologies like Jenkins, Azure DevOps, CircleCI or BuildKite
- A good knowledge and understanding of Git and in particular GitHub
- Microservice development in languages such as Node, C# or Java
- The ability to understand (and debug) complex systems
- Good communication skills – and good listening skills, too
- It’s a real plus if you’ve worked with API-level testing, observability, and infrastructure technology like Kubernetes
As you’d expect, we want to take good care of our member’s money, so we’ll expect you to be aware of good security principles.
Nationwide is known globally as an expert in agile development, and you’ll be joining an organisation with a world-class group of coaches, ready to help you and your colleagues find great ways of working. You’ll be assisted by a professional manager outside of your project team who will be focused on helping you grow.
The extras you’ll get
If you put a lot in, it’s only fair that you get a lot out. Our rewards and recognition scheme includes:
- A personal pension – if you put in 7% of your salary, we’ll top up by a further 16%
- Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year
- Life assurance worth 8x your salary
- A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme
- Access to an annual performance related bonus
- Access to training to help you develop and progress your career
- 25 days holiday
