What you’ll be doing

As a Linux Engineer, you will be working across teams, providing consultancy, build, test and Non-Production support services for the IT delivery community. You will use your technical expertise to solutionise, teach, create and support technical artefacts; creating high quality technical solutions that meet business need to be delivered at pace.

Working within delivery teams you will work collaboratively with others to build the best solution for Nationwide using associated Technologies to exploit Linux.  Using your SME knowledge, you will offer advice/consultancy, help drive continuous improvements and promote best practice through your actions and behaviours.  You will also be instrumental in the technical knowledge growth of the Engineering team around you, with many opportunities for you to learn and grow also.

You will be working with stakeholders and peers to understand and provide input to how the technical infrastructure deliverables coincide with activities both inside and outside the team, making sure solutions align with designs and engineering principles and the architectural strategy.

You may be required to work on-call from time to time.

About you

You will have a proven track record in providing technical delivery of Red Hat Linux (or other Unix variants) solutions.
You will have in depth knowledge & experience of 1 or more of the following:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Administration (Key)
  • Satellite Administration
  • Upgrade/Patching of large environments
  • Ansible and Ansible Tower
  • Terraform
  • Tomcat
  • JBoss
  • Shell Scripting
  • Performance tuning
  • Be comfortable working across multiple projects and immersing yourself in a team
  • Build good working relationships with both technical and business stakeholders, gaining their respect and trust based on your knowledge and professionalism
  • Have the ability and desire to quickly learn new technologies.

Knowledge and Experience of the following areas will also be beneficial:

  • Cloud – AWS and/or Azure (Including the Bakery process)
  • Design of Linux systems
  • Active Directory
  • DevOps tooling
  • Infrastructure as Code (Automation and Scripting)
  • Solaris or AIX Unix sysadmin
  • Packer
  • Jenkins
  • Network and infrastructure security concepts
  • Agile project management methodologies
  • Regulatory environments such as PCI and GDPR
  • Working with 3rd parties / suppliers
