Nationwide Building Society has always delivered great service in new ways: for example, we were one of the first UK financial services providers to provide online banking. Now we want to extend and unify our service for our members and our colleagues, helping us keep and extend our lead as the nation’s best regarded building society.

We’re looking for DevOps engineers that can help us build out the new Nationwide Engagement Platform, powering our applications and simplifying the work of our developers as they create new and better ways our members can make their money work for them.

What you’ll be doing

Working as a DevOps Engineer you’ll be at the heart of helping our members. You’ll help create the systems used by millions of people right across the UK. It’ll be your code that members trust when they make payments from Nationwide accounts. And it’s your code that will help one in ten house buyers in the UK buy somewhere they can call home.

We’re looking for DevOps engineers with passion, creativity, determination and enthusiasm that will help us uncover the best ways of delivering value in the future. We’re taking the services that power our apps to the Cloud, so we’ll need to connect them safely and securely back to our on-premise systems. Right now our technology stack uses NodeJS, .NET Core, Java, APIs defined with GraphQL through Tyk, all hosted on Kubernetes – but what will you suggest we use for the future? Come and help us learn together!

Our teams are close knit, friendly and sociable. You can expect to work alongside experts in banking, payments, risk and CRM, as well as colleagues who understand how our branch systems work and how best to deliver exceptional service. Above all, we’ll give you the accountable freedom you’ll need to propose and deliver the best solution for our members.

We understand that learning is essential for us to grow as engineers, so we’ll provide access to Pluralsight courses, together with subscriptions to developer portals, regular training courses, and the time that you need to learn. There are plenty of opportunities for you to teach, too.

About you

As our DevOps Engineer, we expect you to have skills in the following:

  • Strong knowledge of defining and architecting APIs using either REST or (ideally) GraphQL
  • Good knowledge of security and authentication workflows (such as OAuth etc.), ideally using ForgeRock or another SaaS identity provider
  • It’s a bonus if you’ve experience with Kubernetes, OpenShift or another container platform (we use EKS on AWS and AKS on Azure)
  • A background developing microservices in languages such as Node, C# or Java
  • The ability to understand (and debug) complex systems
  • Understanding of how and what to test
  • Experience in Kafka or event routing is advantageous
  • Good communication skills – and good listening skills, too
