Emmanuel: My TDP experience in Infrastructure Engineering

We talked to Emmanuel, who has embarked on a new journey. From Petroleum Engineering to Infrastructure Engineering, Emmanuel explains why joining the Technology Development Programme (TDP) was the right decision for his career.

Please introduce yourself.

My journey has been a unique blend of working in Petroleum Engineering and success as a sales professional in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. With a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, I embarked on a new journey in June 2023 when I joined the Technology Development Programme (TDP). I'm currently a member of the Infrastructure Engineering team as a TDP analyst. Originally from Nigeria, I've been in the UK since 2021, and I've settled in Middlesbrough with my wife. When I'm not immersed in the world of technology, I find joy in cooking, playing video games, visiting new destinations, and reading about emerging technologies. This TDP journey has ignited my enthusiasm, and I can't wait to unravel where this path leads.

Why did you join the TDP?

My decision to join the Technology Development Programme (TDP) stems from a lifelong passion for technology. While circumstances initially steered me away from a career in the tech industry, my enthusiasm for all things tech never changed. I firmly believe that knowledge and opportunity should not be constrained by your current circumstances, and this conviction fuelled my pursuit of learning and self-improvement whenever I got the chance. The TDP, with its unwavering commitment to nurturing tech talent, presented itself as the ideal platform for someone like me. What resonated was the program's inclusive approach, welcoming individuals from non-tech backgrounds and empowering them to embark on a tech-oriented journey. It was the opportunity I had been eagerly awaiting. The experience thus far has been incredibly rewarding. It has given me the chance to not only pursue a career in tech but also to learn, build, and grow my skills and knowledge. It’s opened doors, broadened horizons, and allowed me to translate my passion for technology into a tangible, fulfilling career. I'm excited to share my journey, insights, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

What is the most interesting project you've worked on in Infrastructure Engineering?

In my relatively brief journey in Infrastructure Engineering, the most captivating project I've worked on so far involves leveraging scripts to expedite tasks that once consumed considerable time. In the preparation of a newly provisioned server environment, the use of a script allows for the near-instant creation of multiple drives, a process that previously demanded minutes, if not longer when done manually. This not only bolsters efficiency but also eliminates the risk of human error when done manually, making it a truly fascinating and impactful endeavour in my infrastructure engineering experience.

What do you enjoy about working in Infrastructure Engineering?

As an enthusiast of automation, it's incredibly fulfilling to find innovative ways to streamline and simplify the software development process. I've had the opportunity to dive into the world of Infrastructure Engineering, where automation, plays a pivotal role. The most rewarding aspect of this work is witnessing how diverse tools can seamlessly collaborate to build systems that not only operate more efficiently but also adhere to best practices. In Infrastructure Engineering, the possibilities are endless, and the room for innovation is vast. It's exciting to constantly explore new ways to optimise and fine-tune systems, making them more resilient and adaptable. The blend of creativity, problem-solving, and the tangible impact of automation in this field makes every day an exciting journey of discovery.

What are the most valuable skills you've gained on the TDP that you'll be able to carry with you in the future?

Through the TDP, I've honed a diverse set of skills that will undoubtedly shape my future. It's equipped me with the aptitude to thrive in a diverse team, enhancing my communication skills. The program has also fostered my problem-solving skills, sharpened my analytical thinking, and instilled in me the capacity to research and adapt swiftly in the face of challenges. These competencies, along with the valuable experiences gained, will be indispensable assets as I venture into the future.
