Jack, from Geology to Cyber Crime

After graduating from university with a degree in Geology, I entered the job market lacking direction and looking for a new challenge. As a long-time member of Nationwide I had some understanding of what made them different from the high street banks, and thought it seemed like the kind of place that I could have a fresh start in a welcoming and inclusive culture. Almost 7 years later I haven't looked back.

I didn't realise how well the technical and interpersonal skills I had learnt and practiced at university would align to a role in technology, and through the Technical Development Programme and my time in the organisation following the programme I have been given constant opportunities and support to continue developing these skills.

On a daily basis I have the opportunity to make and contribute to meaningful change, all designed to make Nationwide and our members’ money and data more secure and safe from the threats associated with modern technology. I love working at the cutting edge of technology, as my role involves identifying priority changes across the cyber threat landscape and assessing what that means for Nationwide, and how we should respond. Problem solving and analytical skills are critical, with every day offering new challenges. I've had the opportunity to design and develop Cyber Incident Response plans, and test these out against real life adversaries.

I'm lucky enough to have the opportunity to give something back to the TDP by taking on the role of assessor in recruitment campaigns, and it's great to see the next generation bringing so much talent and curiosity into the organisation. Having recently recruited a new TDP-er into my team I firmly believe that the TDP and Nationwide provides the best framework for passionate people to reach their potential.
