Making an impact on a Summer Internship

A Summer Internship provides an opportunity to make an impact on our customers from day 1. Our 8 week programmes give you the skills, knowledge and network to do more with your Summer.

We caught up with Shuri, Funmi and Chinenye to find out more about their journey so far.

Shuri: I'm Shuri and I’ve joined as an intern in Nationwide's Data & Analytics team. I'm an ex-postgraduate student in which I studied Financial Technology. I'm looking forward to gaining new skills and experiences from my internship.

Funmi: My name is Funmi and I am thrilled to be interning at Nationwide. Currently, I am completing a Master's degree in Management with Business Analytics. My studies and previous work experience have mainly focused on business and process improvement, human resources and data analytics.

Chinenye: My name is Chinenye, and I’m currently doing my Masters in Banking and International Finance. As a student, I have been involved in different academic and extracurricular activities that have contributed immensely to my personal and professional development.

Why did you choose Nationwide?

Shuri:I chose Nationwide because of it being a building society and not a bank. Nationwide has a long history and is still growing, so I wanted to be part of that growth. Additionally, I wanted to work with a company that has a good reputation. Good working environment and is truly committed to helping its customers.

Funmi:There were several factors that led me to choose Nationwide. It’s reputation as a trusted financial institution that is focused on its customers and members, stood out for me. The commitment to customer satisfaction and ethnical practices align with my personal values. Nationwide's focus on finding solutions that best suit the individual within the Collection & Recoveries sector has also intrigued me. The positive reviews I received from current employees further helped my decision to join Nationwide.

Chinenye: I had learnt about Nationwide’s strong reputation from my studies and I have always wanted to explore the dynamics of working in the world’s largest building society, Nationwide's values closely align with my own professional and personal values. I was particularly attracted to the Society's focus on putting the needs of members first and its commitment to providing excellent customer service. I believe in the importance of building and sustaining trusted relationship with clients and helping them to reach their financial goals.

How has your first week?

Shuri:My first week as an intern has been very intensive with the onboarding and getting to know the members of my team. I had the opportunity to meet with senior managers and really understand the business, its goals, and my role within the company. I had the opportunity to attend meetings and to be a part of conversations that gave me a much better insight into the company and what it is striving to achieve. Overall, it has been a great first week and I am looking forward to a fruitful and successful internship experience.

Funmi: My first week at Nationwide has been an incredible learning experience. I truly feel like a valued employee from day one and appreciate the positive and inclusive atmosphere of the company culture. The entire team has been incredibly supportive, taking the time to introduce themselves, guiding me through the onboarding process and helping me settle into my role smoothly. I have been able to connect with employees who have generously shared their experiences and extended a helping hand as I navigate my learning journey.  Overall, I am looking forward to an exciting and rewarding internship at Nationwide.

Chinenye:It has been great so far, even more than I expected. All thanks to my manager and my team. Weeks before the internship, my nerves were getting the better part of me and I was quite anxious about how it would be as this is my first time of working in a formal role in the UK. However, I was met with open arms and everyone was very welcoming. I have been able to learn more about the company, its culture, it’s people and the technologies in use.

What are you most looking forward to?

Shuri: What I am looking forward most at Nationwide is to meet the other interns and staff members and just get to network and know each other better. I'm excited to be able to learn from experienced professionals and to gain more insight into the different aspects of business operations. I'm also looking forward to the different projects and tasks that I will be assigned to and to gain hands-on experience in the field. Finally, I'm looking forward to the new friendships I'll make and the new challenges that I'll face throughout the duration of my internship.

Funmi:One aspect that excites me the most about my internship at Nationwide is the opportunity to work on real-time projects that have a tangible impact on the lives of its members. The chance to contribute to Nationwide helping people manage their finances and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. Moreover, I am eager to collaborate with professionals who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry. Learning from their expertise and gaining insights into the workings of a large financial institution will undoubtedly be invaluable for my personal and professional growth.

Chinenye:I am eager to collaborate with the experienced financial professionals which will bring personal and professional growth. The Society provides a variety of training and development programs which will help me improve my abilities and expand my skillset. The chance to take on new challenges and deepen my understanding of the financial market is something I am genuinely looking forward to.  Additionally, I love the organisational values and culture of Nationwide. Being part of an institution that values integrity and puts customers at the forefront is something I find highly appealing.
