Agile Delivery of Data Projects

Data projects have traditionally flown from Waterfall planning and organisation. Each phase of design, development and testing would follow each other to a neatly defined set of milestones. Projects could take significant time to show results and, due to the delay in getting any kind of result, would often be not as originally intended.

At Nationwide Building Society, we are changing to a more agile way of working. This is helping to make our data engineering projects more effective, building products that are leading the way into a bright future.

We are increasing our capability to deliver change in a more agile way, as well as applying agile mind-set, through how initiatives are constructed, governed and delivered. We have dedicated agile coaches within Change Development Centre of Excellence, who can train and encourage agile capability uplift and use of Agile methods, e.g. scrum, Kanban, ceremonies, retrospectives, etc.

Squads have been set up to run projects where each development is run via a sprint, usually two weeks. We are fully embracing the changes to ensure we can provide legendary service to our members.

Simplifying our data landscape

Think of the Rubik’s Cube. One that’s been much loved, played with and jumbled up over many years, where every square is now a different colour to the one next to it.
When you pick it up, it can hard to know where to start and in some ways Data Simplification is a very similar challenge.
James, Data Architect, explains.

Keeping it simple

Nationwide’s data estate, like many large organisations, has grown over time, becoming increasingly complex and interwoven, and our Data Landscape Simplification programme aims to reduce this complexity by moving the information that’s best loved and most needed to a single platform.

This means we’ll be able to switch off some of the older systems, remove multiple copies of the same data, and reduce the amount we spend in this area, making sure we’re spending our Members money wisely.

The (not so) simple role of Data experts 

The challenge for our Data Architects and Engineers is to work out how to do this in the most efficient and effective way, making sure we’re only moving data that is really needed, finding the optimal migration combinations that give us the biggest bang for buck, and keeping the lights on for critical processes during the move.

This all requires a lot of planning, experience and close collaboration across our data teams, with Data Engineering at the heart of it, dealing with the complex problems to deliver simple solutions.

What's in your coffee?

At Nationwide, we know that a big part of moving to a data-enabled culture is enlightening the business on what data experts do and how they can help. Here's an extract from Adam's blog explaining the art and science of Data Quality Management.

The coffee analogy

For those of us who are coffee lovers, I suspect we have all bought an Americano, Capuccino, or Espresso and enjoyed the rich aroma and taste. But what if you don’t get what you expected? You ordered an Americano and received a watered-down filter coffee. You have your hopes raised, only to be dashed by poor Data Quality – the barista has written down black coffee, not that strong Americano!

You wouldn't think of a link between getting the Data Quality right at source and your coffee experience being blighted. However, that is exactly what has happened. What you want is not always what you get.

Data Quality Management is seen by many as a science. We need to decide how DQ is measured and what dimensions are important to us. Common dimensions can be defined as:

Accuracy: Data accuracy refers to the degree that data correctly represents the "real-life" entities they model. If a customer is 50 years of age in real-life, the age against that person must be 50 years.

Completeness: One expectation of completeness indicates that certain attributes always have assigned values in a data set.

Timeliness: Timeliness refers to the time expectation for accessibility and availability of information.

So far, so much science. However, the art comes in when you check for a less well used dimension – Reasonableness or Credibility of data.

This can only be checked by those with an in-depth knowledge of the business. You should use reasonableness to consider consistency expectations relevant within specific operational contexts. For example, you might expect that the number of transactions each day does not exceed 105% of the running average number of transactions for the previous 30 days. Only someone steeped in business processes would be able to provide such an insight. This is a REAL art.

In addition, DQM is an art in that you need an eye for detail. Van Gogh uses colour and shade to represent the world around him on canvas. Good quality data needs to likewise accurately represent the real world in digital form.

Next time you get the coffee you ordered and it is exactly as you expected, then give thanks that your barista is an expert…an expert in Data Quality Management!
