Kristian

Finding innovative solutions to complex issues

I joined the Society nearly 10 years ago from a private practice background in London where I undertook a combination of corporate and commercial work for a broad mix of clients including financial services firms, luxury goods companies and sports brands.

My desire to move to an in-house role was primarily driven about wanting to be a part of and really help shape something.  In private practice I would often build strong relationships quickly for corporate transactions or work closely with a client team on a commercial deal but without really understanding its impact or having the opportunity to continue or even grow those relationships.

Progression and achievements

Since joining Nationwide I have undertaken a number of different roles within the Legal & Secretariat Community.  I began as a solicitor in the Business Team, was promoted to senior solicitor, undertook a secondment to manage the Retail Legal Team, returned to manage the Business Team and am now the General Counsel for our Business & Employment Legal Teams reporting to our Group General Counsel.  I was the Non-Executive Leader of the Year in 2014, a finalist for Executive Leader of the Year in 2016 and a member of the Team of the Year in 2018 at Nationwide’s Annual Awards.

Day to day work

The Business & Employment Legal Teams support the entire Society and have a broad remit which includes third party contracts, intellectual property, competition law, data protection, employment, pensions, venturing, insurance, investment and protection.  This means that we are contributing to a broad spectrum of activities within our Society Strategy and I am fortunate to lead a fantastic team of dynamic lawyers who have a broad set of skills.

The challenges

Given the breadth of areas that my teams advise upon, one of my key challenges is ensuring that we are undertaking the right work, with the right understanding to operate as a leading legal team and effectively help manage the Society’s legal risks.  This means that no day is the same but, in order to meet that challenge, all members of the teams are closely working together and with stakeholders across the Society to find innovative solutions to complex issues.  The next additional challenge is how we introduce technology and specifically AI tools into the way in which we work to make us more efficient and further improve the support that we give to the Society.

Why Nationwide?

To anyone considering a legal career at Nationwide (or any other career at the Society), I would simply say that you would be joining at the most exciting time.  This is because we are really in the midst of a period of change and potential disruption for the financial services industry.  Further, we are really starting to see what technology can now and soon achieve to improve the services and propositions for our members.  At Nationwide you will have the opportunity to make a real contribution and help shape something special.
