James Profile Picture2

TDP Degree Apprentice wins silver

Congratulations to James who came second place in this year’s Apprentice of the Year.

Engineering Manager, Denis Lewis, said, ‘James is an excellent example of how we can take an individual with potential and provide a safe learning environment in which they can develop. From day one at Nationwide, he has been undertaking real work and adding real business value. The Apprentice of the Year achievement is a well-deserved reflection of this’.

James has been in the SI Squad from the point he joined the Apprenticeship scheme almost two years ago. During that time, he has significantly expanded his knowledge and experience within this area.

He started off supporting the Design Authority, taking minutes in meetings, to gain an understanding of Design and how the components of the platform fit together to deliver performant solutions. Soon after he moved into the performance engineering function within the Squad.

James joined this team with no knowledge of performance engineering, but his thirst for knowledge has served him well. He started off being given specific tasks to complete but has grown to a point where he is using accountable freedom to influence his work.

This was reflected in his Star of the Month award (Feb 2019) within the SI Squad, his Fresh Perspective award nomination at the Annual Awards, his performance rating for 2018/19 and now his second place in Degree Apprentice of the Year.

Innovation is the only way to protect and serve the financial needs of our 15 million members. This is why we’re looking for technically minded talent to help us reshape technology in banking.

We are:

  • Re-platforming our digital assets and making operating model changes, driven by Agile adoption, DevOps standards and Cloud exploitation
  • Creating new jobs and opening a new UK technology hub
  • Driving UK service leadership through digitisation and multi-channel technology integration
  • Establishing a £50m FinTech venture fund and planning the launch of Open Banking aggregation services
And our Technology Development Programme is a crucial part of our transformation.

So yes, we’re growing fast, but we’re also holding firm to the values that make us different: commitment to our members, our people, and to building society. And we need people who can help us make a positive difference.

About the application process

Most applications will go through four key stages before we make a decision. The process is broadly as below although we sometimes tweak it so this is a guide:

Step 1 Submit your CV and complete an online application form. You’ll have the opportunity to select your chosen intake (April & September 2019)

Step 2 Complete 2 Digital Readiness online tests. These consist of a working memory ability assessment and a personality assessment.

Step 3 If you’re shortlisted after the online tests, we’ll arrange a 20-minute engagement call to ask you about your motivation for applying, your interest in Technology and your IT role preference.

Step 4 The final stage is an assessment centre with assessors from the business. This comprises an interview and individual exercise.

We keep you updated throughout the recruitment process on what will happen next to your application.
