Getting the work-life balance right

“Life moves petty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Film buffs amongst you will recognise this line from the 80’s cult film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This memorable quote also reflects the evolving attitudes of people around the subject of flexible working. Particularly in light of new legislation which has made flexible working a hot topic amongst lots of companies. Working habits have changed greatly over the past few years with more and more people favouring flexibility in their working arrangements.

Work-life balance

It’s no secret that managing your workload and a busy schedule, whilst making the most of life outside the office can be hard to balance. Work-life balance matters to us, so that’s why we’ve got a flexible working policy that sets out the sort of options available and how to request them.

There’s plenty of benefits to flexible working, both for employees and employers. We’ve found that enabling our employees to be flexible in their working arrangements has lead to increased morale, productivity and commitment to the Society.

A job shared, is a job well done

Job sharing is a form of flexible working that we offer with some of our roles, whereby two employees share the responsibilities of one fulltime job.

Sarah and Laura joined our People and Culture department in December 2017 as a job share and between them, they cover the full-time role of an Employer Brand Manager. Before Nationwide, they had known each other for 20 years after meeting through work and have been job sharing for the past 7. They began their job sharing journey when Sarah’s family circumstances changed and wanted to return to work in the same senior position, but not on a full time basis.

“ It’s important to me that I can follow my career ambitions and maintain a senior role, but still have some flexibility for family commitments outside of working life. ”

Finding the best fit

Even in this day and age, job-sharing isn’t common practice but it’s gaining popularity. In last year’s Employee Connect internal survey, one in four of our staff said they were very/quite likely to consider job sharing in the future. Our Employer Brand Manager job advert carried the line ‘open to flexible working and job sharing’ which is unusual for a more senior position. To make sure they were the best fit for the job they were interviewed both individually and together.

“ It can be difficult applying to roles as a ready-made job share. Organisations can be scared of it as they don’t understand how it can work. Nationwide were truly open to it and have made it work. ”
