When I first joined Nationwide Building Society nine years ago as a Mortgage Consultant in branch, I was completely new to this kind of role. However, this didn’t hold me back at all; the in-depth training in mortgages and insurance I received upon starting really allowed me to develop professionally.
The expertise I have gained has not only been invaluable for my career, but has definitely come in handy in my personal life when buying a house too!
My confidence has really grown throughout my career at Nationwide. I was delighted to be given the opportunity to become a trainer, responsible for training new starters, introducing them to the "Nationwide way" and also upskilling current employees with new products and procedures.
Attending various training courses helped me to learn about other people’s learning styles and different teaching methods. I used to find speaking in large groups nerve-wracking, but eventually, through plenty of practice, this is something I started to feel very comfortable with.
Juggling my work and home life has never been a problem. Since joining Nationwide nearly a decade ago, I’ve become a proud mum of two. The fact that Nationwide really accommodates its staff in terms of their work/life balance has taken a huge weight off my shoulders; my husband works shifts at Honda and knowing that Nationwide offers flexible working hours has made my life so much easier.
Having never worked for a financial institution before, I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first started at Nationwide. However, the fantastic training team made learning about the financial world fun and interesting, which made the learning process really enjoyable.
When I made the transition to a Telephony Mortgage Consultant, I was really nervous. Taking my first ever phone call was daunting, but at the same time, it was reassuring to know I was fully supported and I didn't feel rushed at all. Being able to provide assistance to my first customer was a great feeling, and receiving positive feedback made it all the more worthwhile!
Nationwide have always been brilliant at supporting the professional development of its staff.
“ In April 2014, Nationwide decided to invest in their current mortgage consultants and upskill us all to become Cemap qualified. Not only did they agree to pay for all the study material and exams, but also offered us paid study leave to make sure we could pass the exam. ”
For those employees, like myself, who didn’t follow an academic route after they left school, this has been a particularly exciting opportunity; Cemap is a recognised qualification in the financial world, equivalent to an A Level and gives me great prospects for the future!
Thinking about applying for a role at Nationwide but are worried about being out of your depth? My advice would be to just give it a go – the training and development of our employees is something we are passionate about. The most important thing is that you've got plenty of energy and enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and progress.
