Designing and building technology for the future: welcome to the TDP

Our Technical Development Programme gives people starting their careers a platform to help design and build the technology of the future. Sam works within Programme Architecture, and in the last 6 months has worked on a range of projects.

I came to Nationwide straight from my Creative Music Technology degree at Bath Spa University. I worked in complaints for a year before joining the Technical Development Programme.
I knew I wanted to take my career to the next level, and ideally wanted a job in technology. I found out about the TDP through and after researching the programme I decided to apply.

“ Being from Swindon, a lot of people my age wrongly assume that everyone works at Nationwide if they can’t find a job they want after Uni. ”

However, I know that I genuinely found the job I want at Nationwide because I’m doing something I really enjoy. I’m not just working for a big company because it has lots of opportunities for local people: I’m on a career Development Programme in an area that looks at designing and building technology for the future.

Joining the TDP has also given me more financial freedom. My partner and I were looking at houses around June 2015, and the one we really wanted was quite far out of our price range

As soon as my place on the TDP was confirmed I was able to place an offer on the house we wanted which was accepted. I also paid to get away to Gran Canaria after Christmas - I’d never gone away in January before and it was good to get out of the rain for 5 days!

I missed the first week of the TDP induction and I remember feeling like I was always playing catch up. I thought joining on Week 2 all of the friendship groups would have already been formed. However, everyone was very welcoming and I get along with everyone on the programme.

“ I also get excellent support from the programme in helping me develop my interpersonal skills; no two days are the same and I’ve been given real responsibility on projects from Day 1. ”

It’s made me feel like I’m contributing to my Practice Area, whilst still being given the time and support to help me develop and learn new skills.

Out of work my hobbies include playing and watching football, going on holiday and teaching music. I feel that I can still do all of this whilst working for Nationwide, and since joining the TDP my work/life balance has definitely improved massively.

Would I do anything differently? When I first started within Programme Architecture I was perhaps a little too tentative in getting to know the more senior members of the practice. If I could turn back time I wouldn’t hold back on approaching the Senior Members of the team earlier. They’re really welcoming and have always been happy to help me further my development.
