This summer, a group of our emerging talent from the Technical Development Programme (TDP) and Transformation Community Development Programme (TCDP) joined forces with Capgemini, one of Nationwide’s strategic partners, to kick off the TDP’s flagship development event: The Innovation Project.
Hosted in both Capgemini’s Applied Innovation Exchange in London and Nationwide House in Swindon, our emerging talent took part in an intense week of development and training with the aim of solving a real business challenge in an innovative Agile environment. It was a great opportunity to apply learnings from the development programmes so far too.
The Agile Methodology
In the first week, there was a focus on developing project skills, behaviours and understanding Agile project methodology. In the second week, our emerging talent split into four teams to run their own design sprint. The project themes centred around the current financial services trends of Open Banking and Big Data, supported by Matt Cox, Nationwide’s Head of Insight & Innovation.
Market research took place on the streets of London to find out what members of the public thought about the initial ideas and how the team’s ideas could be improved, allowing them to finalise their solution ideas.

Within a week, the four teams had researched, built and delivered a prototype solution focusing on helping members manage their Mortgages and Savings and understand their spending.

The Project closed with a fantastic event hosted by Martin Boyle, the Leader of the Transformation Community at Nationwide. The four teams presented their project journeys and demonstrated their prototypes to a senior audience with employees from both Nationwide and Capgemini forming a panel. The outputs from the event were also showcased in Nationwide’s Innovation Lab for the Society to see what they got up to!
