Relocating for a Grad Scheme isn’t as hard as you may think

I joined Nationwide as part of the graduate scheme in 2014, as an Analyst in Customer Services & Operations. From there I progressed to Account Manager, before my current placement as a Delivery Manager within Digital Operations.

If I'm honest I hadn't always planned on working in the financial services, but I was attracted by the chance to rotate around different business areas and the possibility of fast career progression.

I liked the opportunity of having the scope to try out lots of different roles to help me identify what role is right for me.

Before starting my career I'd studied for a BA Hons in Geography at the University College, London. When I applied, I had a range of business areas to choose from, but I chose Customer Services & Operations because it gave me the chance to understand Nationwide's customers and their experiences.

Nationwide also offered a competitive salary considering the post was based outside of London (graduates accepted onto the graduate scheme start at £28,000 a year).

If I had to say one thing that's surprised me most about working at Nationwide it would be how approachable and friendly everyone is, and how much help they're willing to give to graduates. Since joining I've been able to work with and learn from people at various stages of their career, with encouragement from the rest of my 'Emerging Talent' pool.

I like that I still have time to pursue the things I care about;

I'm heavily involved with the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion agenda at Nationwide, and I'm also part of the committee for Swindon Mela-a festival held every summer celebrating South Asian culture through food, music and dance. Out of work I also play competitive football for Swindon Town Ladies FC.

Day to day we have access to the 'Heads of' business areas, as well as the senior management team. I don't feel like my workload affects my home life too much- a lot of the time I find I can adapt my working pattern dependent on what I've got on that week, and I still have time for my friends and family back home in London. Having grown up in London I love being surrounded by the 'greenery' and the countryside- I didn't get a lot of that back home!
