There's more to finance than London

I graduated from University in 2013 with a Masters in Maths. As a student in a challenging job market I applied to several financial institutions, including Nationwide, but I went for the first offer I received. In hindsight I was probably too hasty but I don’t have any regrets as the company I worked for gave me great jump-start experience in financial services – which is something I didn’t have previously.

After working for a few years, I decided to try my chance with applying at Nationwide again. I was successful and I’m now on the graduate programme, undertaking my first placement within Group Internal Audit.

“ The best thing about my job is that I get to meet and work with a range of people and areas within the organisation. ”

Being a newbie, this has been totally eye opening and a great way to see which areas of the business I could get involved in with my next placements.

As much as I love my role as an Internal Auditor, it wasn't necessarily the career I planned when I was younger. I loved maths from an early age, but like many other young boys, I wanted to be a footballer. I guess in some ways, I did end up in a Maths-based role.

It’s still early days in my career so it’s hard for me to confidently say how I feel about how things have turned out but so far I’m quite happy with my decisions and where my career is going!

Relocating to Swindon for the graduate scheme has enabled me to save money (housing and living is so much cheaper compared to London) and I’ve been able to use my savings to invest in myself. Since starting the scheme, I’ve been able to buy myself a car - I’ve had my licence many years but as I was working in London straight out of university, a car just wasn’t necessary for me. I definitely love the freedom and I’m on the road to somewhere almost every weekend.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, going to the movies and travelling around the country.

“ Nationwide is sponsoring my accountancy qualification which I’ve recently started studying for. ”

The support I’ve received is fantastic which makes it that much easier to maintain a good work/ life balance.

In the long term, once I’ve gained my accountancy qualification, I want to be able to add value to the organisation in different roles by taking on more responsibility. I know that this is possible here as Nationwide offers great opportunities for career and personal progression – in the short time I’ve been here I have learnt so much! I can’t wait for where my time here takes me.

I can definitely say I’ve made my parents proud. Neither of them went to university so as the oldest child, graduating from University with a master’s degree has made them really proud. Everything else from now is a bonus for them I think!

The advice I would give to anyone who wants to go into financial services is make sure you pick the organisation carefully. I really appreciate working at Nationwide as I agree with their company culture and values. There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the building and it’s a friendly place to be.

I believe financial services is a great industry to start your career and you’ll meet many intelligent people from all walks of life. It’s also a great springboard into other industries; always keep your options open as you never know where you’ll end up!
