In 2012, we launched Living on your side, a five year citizenship strategy which brings to life our brand promise “to be on the side of our members”. With it came the aspiration to take our citizenship to the next level and in doing so make a lasting difference to the communities around us.
We’re now three years into our five year citizenship strategy and this year we’ve continued to make strong progress against the targeted we set ourselves in 2012.
Some of our successes this year include:
64% of our employees got involved in citizenship activity
We give our employees 14 hours paid volunteering time to support charities and community projects of their choice. Last year, the value of volunteering hours in work time was £1.2m. During 2014/15 we have encouraged employees to give not only their time, but also their skills and aim to create longer, more meaningful partnerships. We’ve hosted high profile citizenship days which include: Macmilan, Children In Need, Shelter and Comic Relief.
Over half a million of our members have switched to online information
Since making the option available, over half a million of our members opted to receive their AGM information via email, saving paper, recycling costs and the carbon emissions involved in delivering items by post.
In March 2015 we launched our first ever woodlands site in Wiltshire and our employees planted 3,000 trees in just three days!
We want to contribute positively to the environment and that’s why we’re focused on reducing our environmental impact. We’ve promised to plant a tree for every three members who’ve opted to receive their AGM mailing electronically this year– that’s a grand total of 40,000 trees!
33% of employees donated their pennies every pay day and helped raise £37,000 for Charities
Our payroll giving scheme called “Every Penny Helps” lets employees donate the pennies from their monthly pay to one of three charities; Macmillan, Shelter, Alzheimer’s society. This year, this scheme alone helped raise £37,000.
World’s Largest Cream Tea Party
We’ve been in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support for 22 years. This year both members and employees came together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macmillan Coffee mornings. Together, we broke the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Cream Tea Party .
None of our waste is sent to landfills
As a business committed to reducing our environmental impact we’re proud of this achievement. Our other environmental achievements this year include; reducing our carbon footprint by 11% and we now use 25% less water than we did in 2010/2011.
Our long term vision is to create woodlands across the UK that can be easily accessible to members and employees, so that as well as the environmental benefits, we can also provide a long lasting community benefit too.
Nationwide employees have spent more than 72,000 hours for volunteering activities during work hours - worth more than £1.2m
Our employees have a choice of where they’d like to volunteer, whether it is in in schools, colleges and hospitals – they can choose how they’d like to give back to the community and chose charities close to their hearts. Charities that we volunteered for include Macmillan, Children in Need, Shelter and CALM (Children’s cancer and Leukaemia Charity) our local charity of the year.
We were the first high street financial services provider to become a Principal Partner of the Living Wage Foundation
We’re a principle partner of the Living Wage Foundation; the Foundation publishes the rates of the Living Wage each year and we then comply with this. This ensures that our employees are paid a living wage because we believe it’s the right thing to do.
Some of our other activities for the year included:
• Dress down for Alzheimer’s – Our employees dressed down and helped raise money for the Alzheimer’s society.
• Green Action Week – During this week we focussed on our environmental agenda and raising awareness of how we can reduce our impact on the environment.
• Corporate Cystic Fibrosis Bike Ride - £2,403 was raised across the society to support Cystic Fibrosis.
We’re proud of our achievements this year but we’re not complacent. We still have two more years to fulfil our Living on Your Side targets. We’ll continue to work to contribute to making a recognisable difference to communities across the UK.
